Levels: Elementary, Pre – Intermediate
Task: to revise numbers, compare the lifestyle, talk about money
Procedure:
Adults:
- Give your students the worksheet ( see the attachement how-we-spend-money-aj ). Go through the items, explain the vocabulary if necessary. Ask them to try to guess the average age of Americans, their annual income and how is the income divided into specific items.
- Tell your students they are going to watch the video with correct answers. Ask them to put down the real numbers. Play the video:
- Discuss the differences between their estimations and real facts from the video. Where were the biggest differences? What surprised them most? How can they explain it?
- Ask them to complete the last part of the chart. (Emphasize that you do not want exact numbers, just percentage to avoid the feeling of intruding into their privacy.)
- Discuss the differences between their own and American way of spending money. Try to find reasons for differences.
Teenagers:
- Give them the worksheet the lesson before you plan to work with it. Explain the vocabulary
- Ask them to go through the chart with their parents and fill in the last column. ( Again, emphasize that the answers should be in %.)
- In class, go through the points 2, 3 and 5 as described above.
